A Poplar Bluff student enrolled in the computer graphics program at the Technical Career Center has created a new logo to be used to help market the Giving Closet at the High School.

Jessica Paulin, a PBHS junior, was awarded an Amazon Fire Tablet on Tuesday, Jan. 29, after her image depicting an adult handing a student a blouse on a hanger was selected out of 15 submissions total.

The student contest was announced by librarian Marcia Priest mid-January to generate a profile picture for the Giving Closet’s new Facebook page as well as signage and possibly a T-shirt design later.

“The figures were inspired by the game of Life” by Milton Bradley, Jessica explained. “I wanted something simple—not too complicated, and cute.”

Jessica was encouraged to enter the competition by first year TCC instructor, Alex Nicolini. She, along with several of her classmates, submitted three different choices of logos. Jessica said she has benefited from receiving items from the Giving Closet in the past, and has plans to donate some items of her own as well.

The Giving Closet was spearheaded at PBHS during the 2016/17 by Priest, who was encouraged by school board member Alana Robertson, a member of the Bright Futures Site Council. When the new High School facility opened, Priest had an extra storage room in the library that she said she did not need to use in addition to her dedicated office space.

Instead she added shelving and racks, and started collecting second-hand clothing, personal hygiene products, food and school supplies to give out to students in need. The charitable operation currently serves 60 students per week, Priest estimates. Her library science class volunteers to organize regular donations on Fridays, along with the occasional student club.

While the Giving Closet has expanded through word of mouth, Priest wanted to establish a social media presence as well to thank her donors, put out needs to the community and serve as another point of contact for disadvantaged high school students.

While Jessica wants to continue on the path of graphic arts as an aside, she said she may go on to study veterinary medicine. She is currently learning how to create greeting cards in computer graphics and will be certified in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign upon completing the two-year program.
