The Mules Competitive Cheerleading Team was recognized during the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Jan. 20, in the Administrative Building for bringing home the state championship.

Coach Kimberly Smith reflected on the Poplar Bluff High School Cheerleaders’ journey this year that culminated with the 2021 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association Class 4 Small Squad State Championship last month in Cape Girardeau. “What’s most amazing is we don’t have a single senior this year! They’re all juniors, which means we can do it again,” she reported to the school board.

The cheer season began over the summer at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Masters Camp in the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, reflected Smith, where PBHS was awarded the Crowd Leader Spirit Raiser Ambassador Athlete Entertainer Award, along with four blue superior ribbons and two yellow ribbons.

In October, the team went on to take first in the 4A Small Division during the MCCA St. Louis Cheerleading Regional at Lindenwood University. Later that month, PBHS was named 4A Small Division champions during the MCCA Kansas City Cheerleading Regional at Avila University.

Coming off of a “rough season” last year, having to compete virtually, and placing fifth at state, an emotional Smith said: “They came back and kept improving. I am just so proud of them.”
